My name is Alex Monahan. I am a full-time, professional New Zealand hunting guide and I have been guiding since 1987. Hunting has been a lifetime passion for me and my experience will ensure your hunting trip will be an outstanding success.

Where is Doughboy Lodge?
The lodge is situated in Murchison, which is in the top half of the South Island of New Zealand. This is the island where the Tahr and Chamois live (there are no Tahr and Chamois in the North Island). All the animals you may wish to hunt are either on our own private ranch land or in the Southern Alps (a mountain range which runs down the length of the South Island). We have a government concession to hunt in these mountains.

Getting to Doughboy Lodge
From Los Angeles or San Francisco airports you will need to fly to Auckland International Airport in New Zealand and then take a domestic flight to Nelson, at the top of the South Island, where we will pick you up and take you to Doughboy Lodge in Murchison – one and a half hours drive from the airport.

Bring your own firearms
You may bring your own rifle or shotgun into New Zealand. Pistols and military style semi automatics are not permitted, however.

Permit for firearms entering New Zealand
Upon arrival at Auckland International Airport you will need to obtain a police permit for your firearms, for the duration of your stay in New Zealand. This permit costs NZ$25.00. Also, bring your permit or firearms license with you, if you have one. -

How to obtain a firearms permit before arriving in New Zealand
You can obtain a permit prior to your arrival by visiting the NZ Police website .   Fill in the form, fax it back or email to them and the paperwork will be completed when you arrive in New Zealand.

Permits for expediting trophies
Two permits are required. One is the CITES permit and the other is a Ministry of Agriculture permit. Our taxidermist will arrange both permits for you.

Taxidermy
Our taxidermist is based in Christchurch, in the South Island. We arrange shipment of your trophies to the taxidermist, whether for expediting or mounting.

Activities for Non-hunters
Cheryl is only too happy to take guests to the many wonderful areas that are within 2 hours drive of Doughboy Lodge. The non-hunter may enjoy relaxing at the lodge or bush-walking nearby.  Alternatively there is horse riding or a trip to the golf course. For the more adventurous, there is jet boating and river rafting. Not forgetting, of course, shopping for souvenirs and sightseeing.
